Valedictorian Literacy Program™

Where reading becomes identity, confidence, and purpose.

“This isn’t just literacy. It’s identity, confidence, and purpose… disguised as a book. Because when kids believe their voice matters, they use it… with purpose.”

A Literacy Continuum That Grows With the Reader

One system. Three stages. Built to move students forward… without apps or internet.

📘 The Book → 📞 Dial-A-Story → 🐶 Read to a Dog

This is not a single intervention.
It’s a continuum that meets children where they are… and grows with them.

STEP 1: The Book — Where Identity Begins

Valedictorian is more than a story. It’s a mindset.

This illustrated book introduces children, often as early as Kindergarten, to the idea of academic excellence. It teaches what a Valedictorian is, why it matters, and invites students to see themselves as capable, goal-oriented learners.

The result: confidence, vision, and a sense of purpose… early.

Every book includes:
  • Vocabulary-enhancing glossary
  • Famous Valedictorians & Salutatorians poster
  • Valedictorian (In Training) certificate
Children who identify with characters and values in stories show higher motivation and self-regulation. (Guthrie & Wigfield)

STEP 2: Dial-A-Story (Grades K–2)

A phone call that builds readers.

Dial-A-Story is a 24/7 read-aloud line.
Students call, enter a code, and hear Valedictorian read aloud — anytime.

Designed for students who:
  • Aren’t yet fluent readers
  • Lack consistent adult read-aloud support
  • Need strong models of expressive reading
Why it works:
  • Builds fluency through modeled reading
  • Increases access and repetition… without screens
  • Lowers frustration by letting students hear it first
Repeated exposure to fluent oral reading accelerates comprehension, vocabulary, and confidence.
(National Reading Panel; Hart & Risley)
As confidence grows, the program grows with them.

STEP 3: Read to a Dog (Grade 3+)

Where reading becomes a mission.

Students read aloud over the phone.
Their voices are played back to calm anxious shelter dogs — helping them feel safe and increasing adoption chances.

Everybody wins.

  • Students build fluency, confidence, and pride
  • Dogs receive comfort and companionship
  • Reading gains real-world purpose
Why It Works:
  • Purpose-driven reading increases motivation and persistence
  • Reading aloud builds fluency in a low-pressure environment
  • Empathy-based engagement reduces stress and boosts confidence

WHY PURPOSE CHANGES EVERYTHING

When children read because they have to, it’s homework.
When they read because it helps someone else, it becomes meaningful.

Purpose transforms reading from a task into a mission — increasing motivation, persistence, and confidence. That’s why Read to a Dog doesn’t just build better readers… it builds belief.

Purpose-driven reading increases motivation, persistence, and self-regulation.
(Wigfield & Eccles; Guthrie & Wigfield)
“Good night doggie… I’ll call again tomorrow.”
This isn’t homework.
It’s heart-work.

IMPLEMENTATION FLEXIBILITY

Advanced K–2 readers may be granted Read to a Dog access at teacher discretion.
